A French court has allowed Bordeaux négociant CGM Vins to continue to use the name "Petrus" as part of a wine name for a cheap Bordeaux. Château Petrus had already filed a complaint against this in 2011.

CGM is using the name Petrus Lambertini for a wine in the 12 euro price range, which is made from wines from various Bordeaux regions. He was the first mayor of Bordeaux and lived at the beginning of the 13th century. CGM designed the label with a large lettering of the name and the addition "2nd Vin" or "No. 2". Château Petrus had complained that this could be a misleading indication that it was the non-existent second wine of the world-famous winery.

In the first instance Château Petrus had been proved right. The judges ruled at the time that the label could be read in a way that was misleading and prohibited further distribution. In the appeal, however, a few days ago a chamber ruled that the labels were completely different in design and saw no danger of confusion.

Château Petrus has now announced that it will continue the legal dispute in the next instance.
