Franconian wine may also be bottled in Zell an der Mosel (Rhineland-Palatinate) according to a ruling by the Würzburg Administrative Court. The court thus granted the claim of a winery. It had employed Müller-Thurgau to test the quality of wine produced in Franconia but bottled in Zell. This examination is necessary in order for the wine to be sold as a quality wine from the Franconian region. However, the administrative district of Lower Franconia had rejected the application on the grounds that the wine had not been bottled in Bavaria or in states bordering Bavaria. The winery had filed a complaint against this.

The Administrative Court justified its decision saying that the rejection violated the European law on free movement of goods and services. The government of Lower Franconia must therefore admit the wine for quality control. The decision is a precedent. Whether the District Government of Lower Franconia will appeal to the Bavarian Administrative Court in Munich has not yet been decided. A spokesperson told the news agency dpa that they are waiting for the reasons for the decision and will then see what happens next.
