The French barrique producer Surtep has introduced a barrel variant that is toasted with the help of the gemstone jade instead of with open fire. This is reported by the "Decanter". The patented heating system is said to allow better control of the toasting intensity of the staves than traditionally possible with flames.

An electric heating system first heats up the gems, which are excellent conductors of heat, and then toasts the insides of the barrels in permanent rotation. The advantages of the technology are the significantly better ecological balance than with the traditional method as well as a significantly improved expression of the minerality in the stored wine. The company admits to the Decanter that it is a cost-intensive niche application. Surtep had already introduced the "BioOak" barrel line in 2018, which works with lava stones in a very similar way. The new process also works with other precious and semi-precious stones.
