Ten wine-growing areas in the Dutch region of Maasvallei Limburg have been granted a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) from the European Union for the first time in the country's history. In the 155 square kilometres of landscape along the river Meuse, 15 wineries are currently grouped together, some of which had applied for PDO status as early as 2011; the EU granted approval in August 2017.
The wineries have now announced that they will now market their wines from the vineyards, which currently produce Acolon, Chardonnay, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Gris, Dornfelder and Gewürztraminer, with the protected designation of origin "Maasvallei Limburg".
