The German wine must harvest of the 2016 vintage has yielded 9.1 million hectolitres, which is around two percent higher than the previous year's yield. This was announced by the German Wine Institute (DWI) on the basis of the final harvest results of the Federal Statistical Office. This is a good average, as the ten-year average harvest in Germany is 9.0 million hectolitres. The three largest German wine-growing regions, Rheinhessen (2.56 million hl), Pfalz (2.21 million hl) and Baden (1.29 million hl), produced one third of the total German harvest.

However, due to the capricious weather conditions of the past year, the harvest results are subject to very large regional and individual fluctuations. At 58 percent, the quality wine segment accounted for the largest share of the wine musts harvested. Accordingly, 38 percent of the harvest was suitable for the production of Prädikat wines. Regional wines or wines in the "German wine" category, which generally only make up a small part of domestic wine production, accounted for four percent.
