England is slowly developing into a wine-growing nation: Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince Charles, planted the country's one millionth vine at the "South of England Show" agricultural exhibition a few days ago with a festive ceremony. Since 2000, the area under vines in the region has tripled and now covers 252 hectares.

The total of around 500 areas classified as vineyards are currently managed by 135 companies. They have joined together to form the United Kingdom Vineyards Association (UKVA), whose president Camilla has been appointed. The producers currently produce around five million bottles per year. The association expects this volume to double within the next five years.
