The German schooner "Avontuur", which already set sail on August 6th in La Rochelle, France, is expected to arrive in Montreal, Canada, these days with many cases of champagne on board. This environmentally friendly transport between Europe and North America could become the first oil-free freight route between Champagne and overseas destinations, the Bureau du Champagne announced. The further transport on land will be carried out by electric or gas-powered vehicles on roads or rails.

The Comité Champagne and the Canadian logistics group Portfranc are the partners in this project, which initiated the transport of champagne on a sailing freighter to test environmentally friendly exports outside Europe.

Since the early 1980s, producers have been pursuing projects to make more environmentally friendly business practices possible, writes the Bureau du Champagne. In 2003, Champagne was the first wine-growing region in the world to have its carbon footprint calculated for the entire sector and to develop a plan to reduce it through innovative solutions. The weight of the bottles was reduced by seven percent. Many projects have been launched for sustainable viticulture, transport and logistics, energy efficiency of buildings and climate-responsible purchasing. In just ten years, CO2 emissions could have been reduced by 15 percent per bottle delivered, the Bureau du Champagne announced. However, the region was pursuing more ambitious goals and was determined to achieve the interim target of 25 percent by 2025 through further efforts. The long-term goal for the year 2050 is a 75 percent reduction in CO2 emissions.
