The French Alsace wants to position itself as the leading area for organic and biodynamic cultivation in Europe. At a tasting of 50 wines from biodynamic cultivation in Paris, Gilles Neusch, head of the Alsatian wine marketing association CIVA, said his region is the pioneer of biodynamic cultivation. "We shouldn't be shy and let the world know that."
Of the 15,500 ha of cultivated land, 2,551 ha were certified organic, of which 880 ha were biodynamically farmed.18 Alsatian farms belonged to the Biodyvin association, 50 wineries were Demeter members. In addition eight estates have both certifications. Biodynamic wines account for 5.6 percent of the total production. That is the highest value in the whole of Europe.
