In the early morning hours of 1 March, the last ice wine grapes of the 2017 vintage were harvested in Freiburg in Baden. As reported by the Phillip Lang Winery, around 120 litres of Pinot Noir were harvested at temperatures of minus twelve degrees Celsius with around 200° Oechsle. This was reported by the German Wine Institute.
Despite the long time since the ripening phase in autumn 2017, the grapes were in comparatively good health. German Icewine of the 2017 vintage will thus become a rarity: According to the current state of affairs, only three wineries in Württemberg and three wineries in Saale-Unstrut have been able to harvest frozen grapes for ice wine production.
