A bottle of the 1951 Australian Penfold's Grange Hermitage was auctioned at Langton's Australian wine auction house for 67,001 Australian dollars, the equivalent of 42,476 euros. This sets a new record for Australian wine. The 1951 Grange Hermitage was the first bottling of the now world famous wine. It consists of 100% Shiraz from the Magill Estate and Morphett Vale and was produced by the now legendary winemaker Max Schubert himself.

The production volume at that time was 100 cases, which were sold to family and friends. Experts estimate that today there are only about two crates left worldwide. The auctioned wine comes from the estate cellar, cork and fill level were regularly checked in the "Penfolds Red Wine Clinics".
