The new wine guide "Eichelmann German Wines 2018" has been presented in Mannheim. The new edition with now 1248 pages includes 940 wineries and 10,950 wines. For the best white wine collection of the year the Winery Kühling-Gillot from Bodenheim in Rheinhessen was awarded.

The best red wine collection of the year was produced for wine critic Gerhard Eichelmann by Benedikt Baltes, a young winemaker from Franconia. In 2010 he took over the Klingenberg winery and made it one of the leading red wine addresses in Germany. He concentrates entirely on Pinot Noir.

This year, the award for the best noble sweet collection of the year goes to the Fritz Haag Winery in Brauneberg on the Moselle. "The Rieslings from Oliver Haag impress with their elegance and purity, Gerhard Eichelmann summed up the choice of the editors.

Rising star of the year 2018 is Matthias Gaul from Grünstadt in the Palatinate. "He not only creates a furore with Rieslings and Pinot Noir, but also with varieties such as Tempranillo or Cabernet Franc," Eichelmann explained the choice.

In addition to the Wine Estate of the Year, he presented a wine classic, which will thus be included in the "Mondo Classic Library", "in which the great wines of Germany are gathered together". This year the choice fell on the Ungeheuer site in Forst in the Palatinate with the Riesling Großes Gewächs from the Georg Mosbacher winery.

This year the honorary prize for life's work was awarded to Hermann Dörflinger from Müllheim in the Markgräflerland. "Year after year, the fully fermented wines of Hermann Dörflinger are among the best in Baden. He pays special attention to the Gutedel; even the simplest wine always gives a lot of pleasure", was the reason given by the editors.

The 2018 edition, which is available in bookshops for 29.95 euros, was written by the authors Wolfgang Faßbender, Marco Lindauer, Thomas Veigel and Jens Wagner together with Gerhard Eichelmann, the photos were taken by Andreas Durst.
