For the 21st time, ECOVIN, the Federal Association for Ecological Viticulture, awarded the best organic wines in Germany as "EcoWinners". For the first time, not only the wines of the association members of ECOVIN, Demeter, Bioland and Naturland were admitted, but also wines from producers who do not belong to any organic association.

The number of wines entered thus rose to a record 620, of which 147 were finally awarded as winning wines. The 50-strong jury consisted of oenologists and winegrowers as well as traders, journalists and restaurateurs.

"The opening of the competition to all organic farms is well received by the largest association for organic viticulture in Germany. The greater diversity achieved as a result is also to be welcomed from the consumer's point of view," said jury member Ernst Büscher, press spokesman for the German Wine Institute (DWI), commenting on the innovations.

After the competition was adapted to the regulations of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and reviewed by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Agriculture, this year the "EcoWinners" are allowed to wear a medal for the first time. All prize winners can be found on the website www.ecowinner.de.
