The Comité Champagne and the Deutsche Wein- und Sommelierschule in Koblenz have certified three new professional sommeliers Champagne. This means that there are now five sommeliers and sommeliers in Germany with specialist knowledge of the wines and culture of Champagne.

Christoph Gerischer from Dohma, Susanne Lang from the Palatinate and Franziska Lichtenberg from Berlin completed this post-graduate training and demonstrated their expertise in their final thesis. The exams were taken by Thibaut Le Mailloux, Director of Communication of the Comité Champagne and Johannes Steinmetz, Director of the German Wine and Sommelier School. "The quality of the theses shows that the three graduates have dealt with the wines of Champagne, their unique tradition, innovation, history and the attitude to life associated with them far beyond the basic knowledge," said Joachim Steinmetz.

Since 2016, the German Wine and Sommelier School in Koblenz has been offering the new IHK-certified additional qualification "Professional Sommelier/Wine Culture Expert Champagne (IHK)". The intensive course, which is aimed at wine professionals, was developed in cooperation with the Bureau du Champagne and comprises a theoretical and a practical part. In 22 teaching days, the topics of production, sensory and service of Champagne, food pairing, international wine law and general oenology France were taught and then deepened in a three-day excursion into Champagne.

The title of "Fachsommelier Champagne (IHK)" is reserved for IHK-certified sommeliers as an additional qualification. Persons with other qualifications are awarded the title "Weinkulturexperte Champagne (IHK)". As holders of the IHK certificate, the professional sommeliers Champagne are now qualified to conduct tastings and to stage Champagne as an accompaniment to meals in menus.

The training course for the professional sommelier/wine culture expert Champagne (IHK) will be offered again in Koblenz in 2018/19.
