For the three well-known Moselle vineyards "Uhlen Blaufüßer Lay", "Uhlen Laubach" and "Uhlen Roth Lay", the EU Commission has now granted the status of "protected designation of origin" (PDO) after years of approval procedures. Plots of land in the three vineyards are owned by Freiherr von Heddesdorff, Fries, Heymann-Löwenstein, Knebel, Rüdiger Kröber and Richard Richter. The VDP winegrower Reinhard Löwenstein sees with the approval "the first really consistent 'Appellation contrôlée' on German soil" realized.

He emphasizes that the decisive factors here are the precise delimitation of the sites by the State Geological Office, the exclusive cultivation of Riesling, a stock density of 7,000 vines per hectare and more, as well as traditionally oriented cellar guidelines for vinification. New oenological methods are excluded. Clear profiles have been defined for the dry, semi-dry and noble sweet flavours. Predicate names such as Kabinett and Spätlese may not be used for these wines. Heymann-Löwenstein expects that other wineries along the Moselle will follow suit.
