With 15.2 million hectolitres last year, Germany remained the world champion in wine imports. This was announced by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) in Paris. This volume was roughly on a par with 2016.

The second largest importing country in the world is still Great Britain with 13.2 million hectolitres, followed by the USA with 11.8 million hectolitres. According to the figures, however, the USA was number one in 2017 in terms of the value of imported wine: it amounts to around 5.2 billion euros there. By comparison, the value of German imports is only around 2.5 billion euros - less than half. Moreover, the amount shrank by 1.6 percent compared to 2016.

In wine exports, Spain is in first place with 22.1 million hectolitres, despite a slight decline. France exported 15.4 million hectoliters worth almost nine billion euros. Despite the drastically higher volume, Spain only achieved 2.8 billion euros.
