The German Wine Institute (DWI) puts the "coolest German wines" to the vote. Interested parties can select the unusually produced or designed wines from 20 candidates online. The voting takes place at deutscheweine.de/aktuelles/online-abstimmung (German) and www.germanwines.de/online-voting (English).

The wines to be voted on were selected in a multi-stage process from a total of 385 proposals submitted: First of all, independent experts made a wine selection according to qualitative criteria in a concealed tasting, which was then reviewed by another jury of experts. The jury consisted of Romeo Bay (Butter. Kreativagentur Düsseldorf), Björn Bittner (wine blogger, BJRLeBouquet.com), Olaf Deneberger (board member of the German Designer Club and owner of "Liquid Kommunikationsdesign"), Kolja Orzeszko (Senior Director Business Creation at Adidas and co-founder of "Geile Weine"), Sebastian Zabel (editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone) and the German Wine Queen Katharina Staab.

"The jury was enthusiastic - not only about the quality of the wines, but also about the creativity of our wine producers," said Monika Reule, managing director of the DWI and also a member of the jury. "What was important," said Reule, in addition to label design and décor, "was especially the concept and the producers' stories about the wines, which led to thoroughly controversial and very interesting discussions

"While in the grocery trade the external appearance of a wine bottle can decide whether the wine is left or not, storytelling, the telling of exciting stories, plays an increasingly important role for direct marketing," explained jury member Romeo Bay.

The 20 selected wines range from naturally cloudy semi-sparkling wine (PetNat) to cooperative wines from several winegrowers to an orange wine and, according to the DWI, are intended to reflect the willingness of domestic producers to experiment.

The DWI will be offering the wines for open tasting at its Prowein stand (Hall 13, A 80) from 18 to 20 March and also plans to use them at other events this year. The three first-place winners will also be served at the "Cité du Vin" wine experience in Bordeaux.
