In the first quarter of 2020, German consumers bought significantly more domestic wines than in the same period last year. This is the result of the household panel of the market research institute Nielsen, which was commissioned by the German Wine Institute (DWI). According to this, the sales volume increased by four percent, but the turnover only by two percent. However, with the onset of the corona-related restrictions in March, the market researchers recorded a strong increase of around 9.5 per cent each in purchase volume and turnover compared to March 2019.

Across all origins, the quantities of wine purchased in the first quarter of 2020 had remained constant, albeit with a slight drop in value of around one per cent. The average price was €3.48 per litre for all wines, down one per cent on the same quarter last year. German wines fetched €3.64, two per cent less than in 2019.

Businesses that market outside the food retail trade are currently facing major problems, the quarterly survey by Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences has revealed: Compared to the previous year, wineries lost 50 per cent of their sales to gastronomy and 23 per cent to specialised trade in the first quarter. Wine exports by wineries had also declined by 33 per cent.

In addition, consumers had bought more often online. Among the wineries, the share of turnover of online shops had risen by 42 per cent, which compensated for 13 per cent of the quarterly losses of the wineries.
