Over the past twelve months, Germans have bought around 324 million bottles of sparkling wine and spent 1.25 billion euros on it. This is reported by the news agency dpa on the basis of currently published figures from the market research company Nielsen.

German sparkling wine in the legal category "dry" is the Germans' favourite, dpa quotes Nielsen beverage expert Christiane Stuck. This is followed by "semi-dry" and "brut". Champagne is having a particularly hard time in Germany: Nielsen market observers have been registering declining demand for several years now.

This is mainly due to the price: According to Nielsen, Germans spent an average of just 3.86 euros on a bottle of sparkling wine in the past calendar year. During the Christmas and New Year's Eve period, the value is hardly higher at 4.03 euros.

According to Nielsen's figures, Germans had bought an average of four bottles of sparkling wine, champagne, prosecco, cava or crémant in the past twelve months. One bottle each was bought at Christmas and New Year's Eve.
