Champagne sales in 2017 grew by only 0.4 percent compared to 2016. According to figures from the Comité Champagne, a total of 307.3 million bottles were sold. Exports outside the EU in particular rose significantly by nine percent or 77 million bottles, while sales within the European Union fell by 1.3 percent.

Champagne is also doing rather poorly in France at present: sales fell by 2.5 percent to 153.7 million bottles. Above all, according to Comité Champagne, the otherwise important month of December last year was "disappointing". Despite the subdued figures, Jean-Marie Barillère, President of the Union des Maisons de Champagne (UMC) reported record sales of 4.9 billion euros. The reason was "increased added value" - i.e. higher selling prices.
