After thorough deliberations and regional consensus-building, the Carnuntum wine-growing region of Lower Austria has presented a draft DAC regulation after intensive discussion between the stakeholders, which was signed a few days ago by the Federal Minister for Sustainability and Tourism, Maria Patek. This makes Carnuntum the 14th Austrian wine-growing region.

Like Styria as well as the Kamp, Krems and Traisen valleys, Carnuntum, which is located east of Wien and covers 906 hectares of vineyards, will in future rely on a three-tier DAC regulation: regional wine, local wine and estate wine. The range of varieties focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Grüner Veltliner for the white wines, and on Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch for the red wines. Pure-varietal Carnuntum DAC wines must be vinified exclusively from these varieties, blends at least two-thirds. This means that cuvées can also contain up to one third of other quality wine grape varieties - in the case of red wine, for example, St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.

The new DAC regulation stipulates that all wines must be "dry" in flavour and that red wines must also have an alcohol content of at least 12 percent.
