The Barolo pioneer Beppe Colla, owner of the Poderi Colla winery, has died at the age of 88. In the 1960s, as a pioneering thinker with allies such as Renato Ratti, Gildo Cavallotto and other producers, he created the foundations and geographical boundaries of a new DOC, now known worldwide as Barolo DOCG.

In 1949 he finished his studies of viticulture at the Scuola Enologica in Alba. Initially he worked as a winemaker for the Casa Vinicola Bonardi until he took over the Cavalier Prunotto estate in 1956. Until 1990, he produced the Barolo Prunotto vintages there, which were often considered outstanding. He is considered one of the first winemakers to market Barolo from the Bussia vineyard in the 1960s. From around 990 Colla began a cooperation with Piero Antinori, to whom he later sold the estate.

A few years later he founded the family business Poderi Colla with his brother Tino and his nephew Pietro. 2019 would have been the year of his 70th harvest.
