The famous Italian winery owner Angelo Gaja from Piedmont has been awarded the "Winemakers Winemaker Award" by the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) at the ProWein in Düsseldorf. With this award, the Institute honours his extraordinary lifetime achievement in his work as an influential wine producer. Gaja is a "traditional winemaker, successful businessman and committed member of our family", praised him by Adrian Garforth MW, Chairman of the IMW. Angelo Gaja began his work in his family's winery in 1961 and took it over in 1969. In the meantime, the business with the three estates Gaja in Barbaresco (Piedmont), Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino and Ca' Marcanda in Castagneto Carducci (both Tuscany) is run by his daughters.

Before Gaja, Egon Müller (2015), Alvaro Palacios (2016), Eben Sadie (2017) and Jean-Claude Berrouet (2018), for example, received the "Winemakers Winemaker Award".
