The French Bordeaux legend André Lurton has died at the age of 94. The "Decanter" reports this. He is considered one of the most important persons in the modern history of the Bordeaux wine region. Lurton also played a decisive role in the creation of the Pessac-Léognan wine region in 1987, with 55 châteaux and 813 hectares of vineyards at that time. Born in 1924, the winemaker and landowner fought against the Germans during the Second World War. His career began in 1953 with the acquisition of Château Bonnet in Grezillac (Entre-deux-Mères), after having worked in the vineyards with his father Francois Lurton since the end of the war. Today the estate has 300 hectares of vineyards. In 1965 he bought Château La Louvière, and in 1970 Château Couhins-Lurton was added. Today, Vignobles André Lurton owns 600 hectares in the southern Bordelais. He also owns Château de Cruzeau, Château de Rochemorin and Château de Barbe Blanche.

For 20 years, from 1966 to 1986, he worked as director of the prestigious Bordeaux winegrowers' association CIVB, and later as mayor of his home town.

André Lurton Lurton leaves behind seven children, most of whom are also active in the wine business.
