The French ampelographer Dr. Pierre Galet, one of the world's most important grape variety experts, died a few days ago at the age of 98 in Montpellier after a heart attack. Galet started his scientific career in 1946 at the University of Monpellier and published his first work "Précis d'ampélographie pratique" in 1952. It was awarded an important scientific prize. By 1976 the book had grown in several editions into a four-volume work with more than 3,500 pages. He also wrote popular science books on grape varieties and their determination. In 1979, based on his work, the Handbook for the Determination of Grape Varieties was published, which was edited by his former student Lucie Morton in 1979 and also appeared in English.

Dr. Pierre Galet's work on ampelography has gained worldwide reputation and has been honoured with several high-ranking awards. The legacy of his scientific work is kept at the Centre Pierre Galet of the Viticultural Museum in Montméliain.
