During the Corona crisis, people on almost all continents of the world drank as much or less alcohol than before the beginning of the pandemic. This is the result of an international survey of 11,678 people conducted by the YouGov opinion research institute on behalf of the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD). They live in Australia, South Africa, Mexico, France, the United States, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and New Zealand. According to the study, 84 percent of citizens in these states drank the same or less alcohol than before the crisis. In Germany, the figure is even around 88 percent.

According to their own statements, 30 percent of the respondents in all countries drank significantly less or completely abstained from alcoholic beverages. Almost half of the people in this group stated that they would continue to drink less alcohol than before even after the restrictions were relaxed. In Germany, the figure for this group is around 19 percent.

In contrast, eleven percent of those questioned in the survey stated that they had drunk significantly more alcohol than usual during the lockdown. Of this group, 72 percent intend to return to their previous drinking habits after the end of the pandemic. This means that they also intend to consume less alcohol again afterwards.
