Sales of wine and sparkling wine in Germany have fallen slightly, according to the figures of the German Winegrowers' Association. According to these figures, sales in the fiscal year from August 1, 2018 to July 30, 2019 amounted to 19.45 million hectoliters, a decrease of 0.3 million hectoliters compared to the same period of the previous year.

This represents a decline of around 1.5 percent. This results in an average per capita consumption of 23.4 litres for the current 83 million German citizens. Only 8.7 litres of this were consumed in Germany, 11.4 litres were wines from abroad. The consumption of sparkling wine is 3.3 litres.

The decline was stronger than the average for wine: overall, 1.9 percent less was sold during the period of the business year. In contrast, sales of sparkling wine increased by 0.8 percent.
