IMG_0369It was only during the evening that I really realised how good the wine - especially this vintage - is. And today, when I googled it, I was almost shocked by the prices. Of course I knew what I was getting out of the cellar. Of course it was only clear that I was drinking a little "preciousness" here. But the 1990 vintage - the showpiece year of the 90s, so to speak - has to go into the glass gradually, even if one likes to "save up" something like this. For whom, until when, why...? This was going through my mind when I reached for the bottle. An "ordinary" day, Saturday, just before a major trip. Why not now.

At first I just nodded appreciatively. Good, yes, quite good. But the longer the wine was open and in the decanter (or in the glass), the better it became. Nobly soft, profound, harmonious - with every sip it became "bigger". I am cautious with such compliments, it could also be due to me, to my mood, to my current state of mind, to comparisons with wines I have drunk recently.

But this time it was not up to me. And it stood up to any comparison. I'm convinced of that. Actually, I don't need any crown witnesses for that. In this case, I am quite sure: a great wine, one of the best I have had in the glass lately, above all a Bordeaux that does not show off, but through its fine aromas, through its now quite open but discreet fruit, through its bouquet of cinnamon, tobacco, plums and cassis, all bound in velvety tannin. I am thrilled.Ch. Latour, Weinberg-Rosen - TM

Then I consulted Parker, Gabriel and Co. after all. Is my enthusiasm just a momentary "mood swing"? Gabriel: "It's one of the great 90s Bordeaux!...It was simply awesome... If you don't finish it now, you'll probably regret it soon...". The wine is not cool, it is much too noble, too aristocratic for that (without the winery belonging to the aristocrats of Bordeaux) but otherwise René Gabriel is right (also with his 19/20 points). And I don't regret anything, not even the evening, not even that it was the usual weekday when I had it in my glass.
