What does Riserva mean?
In Italy, Riserva is an additional designation for quality wines that correspond to the protected designations of origin DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) or DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) or DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta). Riserva wines have a longer maturation period behind them than the wines in question without the additional designation. The exact specifications vary from region to region; often it is also prescribed how long the wine must be matured in wooden barrels and how long in the bottle. Usually, the maturation period is at least between two and four years
