Which wine goes with duck?
Duck, with its dark meat, goes well with a dry red wine that is both powerful and elegant.
Three classic ways of preparing duck are given as examples:
- Duck with red cabbage and potato dumplings goes well with Pinot Noir, Lemberger(Blaufränkisch) or Sankt Laurent.
- Duck à l'orange can be accompanied by a red wine that, thanks to a certain maturity, has a fine melt and crisp tannins, such as a Syrah from the Rhône, a Primitivo from Apulia or a Tempranillo from Rioja.
- Duck prepared in Asian style needs a sufficiently spicy partner - for example, the traditional southern French varieties Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well as Grenache Noir and Carignan; Tempranillo, Monastrell or Primitivo are also suitable.
