Spring

It is May, and certain signs already indicate that Switzerland will have a special wine-growing year. Damien keeps a constant eye on the weather. Many thunderstorms are threatening. A few metres decide whether everything will be destroyed or not. Marion can hardly find any help, but then Christian arrives. In June, the water in the pipes in Beudon stops. Quick action is called for. Summer is approaching in a rush. Irene's vines are infected by a virus. Valentina takes advantage of the balmy spring temperatures for a photo shoot in the vines. A charity event is organised in honour of her deceased younger sister. Pierre Monachon, on the other hand, has something else to sell, the "Fête des Vignerons", which focuses on the hard work that his son Basile does just a few kilometres away. On the tracks of the primeval sea between the Saarpfalz, Moselle and Ardennes (1/2)
From the series "Take a drive

Hundreds of millions of years ago, large parts of the south-west as far as France and Belgium were covered by primordial oceans. Finding traces of them is not that difficult. Fossils and even entire landscapes tell of those long-gone times when montermolluscs ruled the seas. The starting point for this exciting search is the Saar Palatinate with the Bliesgau. This is Ernst Jeanrond's hunting ground. For more than 60 years, the passionate amateur geologist has been on a primeval discovery tour around his hometown of Kleinblittersdorf and knows the best sites. Right on his doorstep, fossilised crabs, corals, reptile bones and lots of ammonites lie at his feet. Hikers in the Bliesgau walk over millions and millions of shells and limestone-shelled animals. The farmers here are happy about their fertile shell limestone soil. The Urmeer tour continues to Homburg to the largest red sandstone caves in Europe and to the Gondwana amusement park, where today's visitors can experience live, in retrospect so to speak, what it might have looked like in the southwest in prehistoric times. Then it's off to look for fossils in the so-called Lebach Eggs around Lebach and on to the Moselle in the wine village of Nittel. Thomas Sonntag is an organic winegrower here and is convinced that the former sea can still be tasted in his wine today.

Gernstl's culinary investigations
Veneto

Franz Xaver Gernstl goes on a culinary journey of discovery in the Italian Veneto. Alexandra Kaufmann, a Bavarian filmmaker who has lived in Italy for a long time, accompanies him. The Veneto stretches from the Alps to the Po Valley and is bordered by Lake Garda in the west and the Adriatic Sea in the east. The tour starts in Valdobbiadene. In the midst of the Trevesin hills there is a lonely hut - a snack is ready. Cheese, salami, bread and chilled Prosecco - the semi-sparkling wine has its home in the Veneto. Payment is a matter of trust. The owner of the hut is master butcher Cesare De Stefani. His concept is explained in three words: "Trust. Freedom. Hospitality," he says. We continue on to Caorle. The town is on the Adriatic Sea, and Gernstl learns from the fishermen that the regional speciality is a fish soup called "brodetto": fish, tomato paste, vinegar and garlic. Finally, it's off to Venice. On the cemetery island of San Michele, wine lovers preserve the vines of a former monastery garden and the last historic wine cellar in Venice. The tour ends with wine, good conversation and regional delicacies.

History & Discoveries
The Moselle

Steep slopes and magnificent views, the Moselle is one of Germany's most breathtaking rivers. But working on its banks has never been easy. Nevertheless, young people in particular are once again choosing to live along the Moselle - in France, Luxembourg and Germany. Rebecca Materne and Janina Schmitt belong to a new generation of winemakers who have rediscovered the steep slopes of the terraced Moselle. Rebecca Materne comes from the Ruhr area, Janina Schmitt from Hesse. In 2012, the friends leased a vineyard in Winningen near Koblenz - and grow Riesling on the slopes with an incline of more than 50 degrees - without using machines, without pesticides. The couple's life is characterised by the unpredictability of the weather and hard work: tying the vines in spring, bottling in ssummer grape harvest in autumn. It would not be possible without the help of family and friends. If both want to make a living from winegrowing one day, their business has to grow. But Materne & Schmitt are optimistic. The people on the Moselle love their homeland. The river offers a sense of security. And that is why in some places along the Moselle, customs and traditions live on as they did centuries ago. In Contz-les-Bains, France, in the border triangle of France, Luxembourg and Germany, young men are preparing a grandiose spectacle for St. John's Day. A huge wooden wheel is supposed to roll down a mountain into the river. If it works, it promises a good harvest. In Traben-Trarbach, the "Stadtschröter" drag a tree trunk through the town to set it up as a guild tree on the banks of the Moselle. Schröter were once indispensable for the wine trade. They heaved the filled barrels out of the cellars to load them onto ships. The advent of the wine pump caused the craft to die out.

View of Bullay from the Prinzenkopf tower: the Moselle valley is a narrow place. The villages use the little space between the slopes and the river. Here the view of Bullay.

Mayor Georg Plattner returns from Brussels with four million euros in subsidies for a new marketing structure. He wants to set up a new winegrowers' association that can sell high quality at low prices. He deliberately misinforms Thomas Stickler so that he refuses to become a member. Georg definitely does not want Thomas to gain a foothold as a winegrower in Rust. After all, he has not yet made it to the harvest. So he wants to prevent his rival from bringing the wine to the buyer. Grand vintner and former mayor Gottfried Schnell sees this as a new devilry on Georg's part and joins the new cooperative. Georg thus witnesses how his predecessor in office tactically undermines him. Thomas and Paul are worried because their first sales contract with the wine merchant is still a long time coming. Here, too, Georg is obviously behind it. Hermine, meanwhile, is eagerly awaiting the opening of the inn. A cook has been found. A young genius, it seems. Anna, Thomas's daughter, also suddenly finds it not so boring in the small town. Finally, all the town's dignitaries are present at the opening. Georg Plattner also attends in his capacity as mayor. Hermine thanks him for putting the preservationist on her and then so generously arranging for funding. Thomas is surprised by the visit of the wine merchant who comes with the signed purchase contract. He has decided on quality and personal sympathy. Now happiness is perfect. Presenter Jens Hübschen meets the Rhine-Hessian wine queen Laura Lahm, learns that wine has existed in Ingelheim at least since Charlemagne, meets an artist who paints with red wine, experiences a "wine safari" and is treated to culinary delights like an ancient Roman in one of the legendary Rhine-Hessian "Kuhkapellen". On nostalgic tracks
A voyage of discovery along the Reblaus Express

Travelling as in the 1950s: The "Reblaus Express" with its frame cars and the Heurigen wagon takes visitors back in time. Travelling is possible from May to the end of October. The nostalgic train set of the Lower Austrian transport organisation Növog shows that travelling can be more than just getting from A to B: it can be pure enjoyment. Whether on the open platform between the carriages you let the impressive landscape of the Wein- and Waldviertel pass by at a leisurely pace or you are pampered by a local winegrower in the Heurigen carriage with a glass of wine and the delicacies of the region, here you experience one thing above all: deceleration. But the journey has even more to offer. On the 40-kilometre route from Retz to Drosendorf, film author Michael Ranocha stops at several places worth seeing. In Retz he visits the town's cellars, which are up to 20 metres deep and were dug into prehistoric sand, and in the Thayatal National Park he visits a "European primeval forest" including the forest wildcat, which was already considered extinct. He also meets a wine coachman in Weitersfeld who produces excellent vegan organic wines. In Hessendorf he explores the fishing paradise, and in Langau he gets on water skis. A visit to Geras Abbey brings him the acquaintance of the herbal priest Felsinger, who cultivates his knowledge of medicinal herbs in the seclusion of monastic life. Finally, he ends up in the only town with a completely preserved town wall, namely Drosendorf, where he indulges in culinary delights at the "Golden Lamb". The Retz-Drosendorf local railway started operating in 1910 and has a short but eventful history behind it. In 2001, passenger transport was discontinued. The following year, the "Reblaus Express" was launched. You can travel 40 kilometres from the vineyards of Retz up to the Waldviertel, get on and off at ten railway stations and explore the surrounding area. Bicycle transport on the train is free of charge in your own bicycle carriage.

During Soviet times, legions of workers were allowed to holiday every year on the beaches of the Black Sea or hike in the magnificent vineyards. Russia has occupied a fifth of the territory since the 2008 Caucasus War, recognising the regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states and installing puppet regimes. Since then, Georgia has aspired to Europe and hastily signed an agreement with the European Union on 27.6.2014. The country has pushed ahead with democratisation, even its architecture reflects this. Served up
In the Seewinkel

The Burgenland Seewinkel on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl: due to its isolation for many years on the border to Hungary, its remarkable marshlands, salty lakes, adapted vegetation and biodiversity, the area is unique. The National Park Act passed in 1992 placed large areas under nature protection after a long struggle, and the transformation process of the last few years has been crowned with great success. Two main themes have merged two areas, Heideboden and Hanság, and made them equally attractive: as an internationally recognised wine-growing area and as a unique bird nature reserve on the edge of Lake Neusiedl. Today, UMDENKEN is once again at the forefront in the Seewinkel to the east of Lake Neusiedl. It is not uncommon to meet new starters, through starters and late starters here: Judith Beck has reorganised her winery according to biodynamic guidelines. Since then, the winery has been geared towards maximum quality and not maximum profit. Instead of profit orientation in the old profession of cellar master, Michael Andert now grows vegetables. As a gourmet, teacher, cook and "micro-vintner", together with his brother, he knows exactly what is best for the soil and thus also for himself.

At Table in Provence

For 25 years, Rose-Marie Bernard rented out rooms to holiday guests on her old Provençal vineyard. Then she didn't feel like it any more, but she didn't want to be alone either. So she divided the farm into five flats and sold four of them to young people from the area. She now celebrates Christmas twice, once with her family and once with her new house community. Manuel Bernard, Rose-Marie's son, brings his three children and his own wine. Manuel is a winemaker at the "La Martine" vineyard. The Christmas season is anything but tranquil for him. Because around Christmas he prunes the vines and prepares the young wine in the fermentation tanks for the cuvée. Only this bringing together of different varieties produces a harmonious Côte du Rhône in the end.

Enchanting Moselle

The programme is available online from 19/08 to 18/09 on the ARTE internet portal. The source of the Moselle lies in the southern Vosges mountains, whose dense forests inspired a world-famous theatre. Its sun-drenched slate slopes are home to one of the steepest vineyards in the world - the infamous Calmont. Along its 544 kilometres, the Moselle shapes a centuries-old cultural landscape and people whose fates have been firmly linked to it for generations. "360° Geo Reportage" visits fairies and elves, climbs into gigantic power station turbines and flies over the steep Calmont. Kilian Franzen is one of those young and creative winemakers on the Moselle. His vineyards, located in the steep Calmont, have tradition. The slate soils typical of the Moselle, the steep slopes protected from sun and weather, offer the best conditions for growing grapes.

The Saar

The canalisation of the Saar in the 19th and 20th centuries has changed the landscape, and some of the deepest locks in Germany can now be found in its lower reaches. This is also the home of winegrower Christian Ebert. Industrial use and ecological viticulture may seem like a contradiction in many places, but not so on the Saar. Even steep slope expert Ebert has nothing against the cargo ships chugging along in front of his vineyards, on the contrary: the development into a major shipping route ensures an evenly wide expanse of water. This moderates the temperatures in winter. Less susceptible to frost and with a more pleasant acidity of their wines, the canalisation of the Saar has been a blessing for the winegrowers here.

Treasures of the World - Heritage of Mankind
Bordeaux

"Bordeaux" sounds like a good, mature, deep red wine to most people in the world. The city of Bordeaux in the southwest of France comes next. The success story of the two, however, is closely linked. Bordeaux is steeped in tradition and, in the continuity of its history, a city of the most influential wine merchants on earth. They have helped the port on the river Garonne to achieve the prosperity that has made the name "Bordeaux" a seal of quality and a synonym for culture to this day. Since the 16th century, the city's bourgeoisie has stood for self-confidence, a desire for freedom, pride and independence. A bourgeoisie that, thanks to its far-reaching trade relations, used its location on the banks of the Garonne to maintain economic relations with England or Portugal, with North Africa or South America for centuries. Skilful, cosmopolitan and largely independent of centralist royalist Paris, Bordeaux showed itself to be a pioneer of economic globalism.

planet e.: Farmers in heat stress
Climate crisis in the fields

Hot summers, hail, pests. Climate change presents Germany's farmers with enormous problems. In order to survive, they have to adapt. But what strategies can work? Research is being carried out at full speed: Are new, more robust varieties the solution? Is it high-tech in the field? Or a return to old farming methods? The supermarket shelves are still well stocked. But industry representatives warn that this could change quickly. Many viruses and pathogens like the milder temperatures and have been spreading dramatically in Central Europe for a few years. One of them is the fungus Esca. It attacks vines and can cause them to die within days. An ancient wild vine that botanists at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) discovered on the Rhine island of Ketsch could help: It is virtually insensitive to Esca. The researchers now want to know: Can these resistant properties also be "crossed" into other grape varieties? New strategies or business as usual? The heatwave summer has alarmed farmers and scientists. "planet e." explores the question of whether the battle against climate change can be won in the field at all.

Delicious in the country
A guest of Agnes Schütte in Rheinhessen

For this year's friendly cooking competition "Lecker aufs Land", six countrywomen from the south-west travel from farm to farm in an old-timer bus. The focus is on a three-course meal prepared by the hostess, which is judged by the fellow contestants. On their journey, the women explore the different regions and get an insight into the everyday life of the other families. In this episode of "Lecker aufs Land" we go to Agnes Schütte in Rheinhessen. Agnes was searching for a long time. She lived in Munich and Berlin, worked as an archaeologist on excavations in Lebanon and Turkey, until she finally returned to Alsheim in Rheinhessen to take over her parents' vineyard. After teaching at the university, she went back to school herself and graduated from the viticulture school in Oppenheim. Her great-grandmother Elise and her grandmother Annemie already ran the winery. Agnes' father Albrecht converted it to organic viticulture. In addition to Riesling, Silvaner and Pinot Noir, Agnes also produces grape juices and verjus, the juice made from unripe grapes that the Romans used to season their food. In her self-sufficient garden, she grows seed-proof vegetables and edible flowers for herself, her partner Joscha and their three children. For the countrywomen, Agnes takes recipes from her great-grandmother's cookbook, which she has translated a little into modern times. For starters, the winemaker will serve a spelt salad with goat cheese and radishes, for the main course Riesling chicken with herb spaetzle and root vegetables, and an iced soup for dessert.
